The current imbroglio over the Labour leadership and the surprising rise in the popularity of a far-left, union-backed outsider such as Jeremy Corbyn, along with the furious repudiation of Harriet Harman’s assertion that mere blanket opposition to every Conservative policy is not the wisest approach, suggest an inability both to understand the reasons they lost the election so decisively and to develop policies which will put them back on the road to acceptability. It would help if they started by learning the basic lesson that every party that aspires to government must accept: If you wish to be elected, you, as a party, must measure up to the desires and aspirations of the electorate, not the other way round. |
