"Fairness" has to be the most abused term in this election, and has now also been applied to this policy by those who exercise the politics of envy. What is wrong with providing a benefit to one section of the community, just because other sections can't access the benefit? Critics are wilfully ignoring the provisions that are proposed to encourage housing associations and local authorities to reinvest the revenue in building new affordable social housing. The plan also includes funding for developing brownfield sites. A borough like Hounslow, sitting on expensive but run down properties in leafier suburbs could really exploit this initiative in a positive way and create many more affordable new builds. That is what I would call "progressive" (the other over-used and abused term in this election), in contrast to the old "tax and spend" ideas of the Greens et al who are trying to stir up a class war and take us back to the 70's. |
