"You're suggesting that the house is sold for 1.1 million to a rich person who wants to live in Chiswick, and you build a house or two (if we're lucky) in Feltham for social housing." In this Alice in Wonderland land that is Social Housing neither social housing nor genuinely affordable homes are actually being built where the need is greatest. If you are currently living in Feltham and get to the top of Hounslow Housings "list" then why does anyone think that it is sensible that you should move to Chiswick? If the Chiswick house was sold then social housing could then be built in Feltham where it is needed. In fact the London Borough of Hounslow are sitting on millions of pounds of "new homes bonus" given to them by those wicked wicked Tories who wish to grind the faces of the poor etc ... you know the script. LBH has this money because private developers have been building new housing in the Borough and this triggers public funding from Central Government (those wicked, wicked Tories) with very few strings attached. In addition Boris Johnson has recently provided LBH with a massive grant to build even more housing in the Borough ... those wicked, wicked Tories who love to grind the faces of the poor .. come on all join in now you cannot leave it all to Nicola Sturgeon. Lets talk turkey again - there is a street in my ward where all the properties used to house elderly residents in purpose built social housing flats. By today's standards these flats were pretty basic and are in fact no longer fit for purpose and are not capable of being ungraded. My councillor colleagues Paul Lynch and Felicity Barwood worked hard to find alternative good quality appropriate housing for residents. This involved the third sector and Hounslow Council - a local charity sold a house in Chiswick and invested in a project to build purpose built flats in Isleworth. We were told that the old properties would be demolished and that modern housing would be constructed on the site including affordable housing and possibly some social housing. In fact the properties are now occupied by temporary tenants from all over the Borough (they have to go some where) and the new housing that will eventually be built on the site will all be for private ownership. Now that does smack of social engineering. Then there are the 910 housing units approved by LBH that are to be crammed into Lionel Road Brentford, without a single one being even an affordable home let alone social housing. |
