No, I would not exercise my "right" to buy if I could afford it because it will simply remove housing from the public sector. Thatcher initiated it because of ideology and Labour pursued it to escape responsiblity for maintaining housing. One of the unintended consequences of my road being largely social housing is that we have a stable community of people who have lived there for decades and we mostly know each other. The real right that I would like to have is security of tenure at a truly affordable rate (perhaps reflecting a percentage of mean earnings), with a guarantee that the housing stock would be properly maintained. |
