I have to confess that we took advantage of the 'Right to Buy' for several reasons in the 80s and if we hadn't I doubt we'd have ever been in a position to buy. But things are apt to come back and bite you, because Thatcher wouldn't let councils use the capital receipts to build and replace the houses sold we are in the most appalling state now. Hence I still have two sons in their thirties at home and with bog-all chance of being able to afford to rent, let alone buy. I must say it never changed the way we voted, I would far rather the Labour Party - who did consider this as a policy - had had the courage to do this. Why shouldn't councils be able to build both to rent and buy? As it happens we are still living in the same house, but whether we could afford to move unless we go out of London is quite another matter. Not only do we need a massive public home building programme we need to be looking at innovative building systems, to build quickly and in an environmentally friendly way. |
