John, I'm not disagreeing with anything you say. However, I think the arrangement in which a Council funds the care of an elderly person in return for being given a lien on a property is not an unusual arrangement. You are quite right that none of this really needed to be confidential and that, as Council Leader, Julian Bell needed to appear to totally open about any financial dealings he had with his own local authority. What has happened is that information seems to have trickled out in a way that makes things look far more suspicious than they really are. If you find the Ealing Gazette in Chiswick you will be lucky but you will see they have clearly been lent on to supply an official version of events. This seems to me ridiculously counter-productive as the problem is increasingly not what Julian Bell has actually done but his futile attempt to try and control what information gets into the public domain. By not making a full disclosure he has allowed his opponents to make a partial disclosure of the most incriminating facts only. |
