Late reply. Yes, people do seem to be losing faith in the NHS.
Yet this study from the Commonwealth Fund incorporating research by the World Health Organisation and OECD finds the UK to have the second lowest healthcare costs out of the 11 developed countries surveyed and to be top in terms of performance across a range of indicators.

So as our health system gets top marks from a widely respected organisation carrying out objective analysis, why are people losing faith in it? A number of people I've mentioned this report to have never heard of it, it didn't seem to get much traction in the press.
Tragic, individual cases of people having very bad experiences with the NHS have gained great traction and are influencing opinion. But is that reasonable? In considering how our health care should be organised, should we look at extreme individual cases or broad studies by respected bodies?
And why did this report make so little impact? We ask what defines Britain, what can we be proud of; this report suggests that the NHS is something we can be very proud of.
The US Healthcare system is the most expensive, with the worst outcomes for efficiency, equity and acess. The crisis is the US system is regularly reported in the US and in publications like the Economist, but also gains little traction here. If it does it centres on Obamacare, as though that itself was the problem, rather than an attempt, albeit it one beset with problems, to address the crisis.
I have sent the link to the report to people I know, I think it is sad and worrying that people don't know how good the system we have is. Not perfect, no, but on an objective analysis the best in the developed world.
