I'm afraid that's nonsense. It's a matter of choice. We either pay out of taxes, out of private funds, or forgo the healthcare altogether. A tax-funded NHS was introduced because the public didn't think the previous system, where you either had the money to pay or didn't get healthcare (if you were lucky you might get a bit of charity) was any good.

You could equally say "So how anyone can argue that we can continue to fund a state pension with this massive increase in pensioners in the pipeline, especially as they are all living so darn long, is not in touch with reality." We equally could in no way afford WW2, after which we were in debt to a scale not remotely approached by the current situation. But it was important, so we found the money.
