My elderly father had (yet another) fall at his sheltered housing yesterday. Paramedics were called to check him over. I spoke to them on the phone and they were lovely. They wanted him to go to A&E, just in case, but he refused. The reason for this is that, his local A&E having closed last year, the nearest one is about 15 miles away and, having been seen, he is left to make his own way home which, given that he can hardly walk, means a minicab costing 30 quid, or more than half of his weekly food budget.
What really bothers me, though, is that his GP was asked by the paramedics to look in on him and apparently agreed to do so, only to decide he couldn't be bothered, so he sent a prescription for painkillers instead. The surgery is two minutes' drive away. Any GP who wasn't a complete a-hole would have at least looked in on him on his way home in an attempt to justify his £100,000+ a year salary.
This is the future, people, when we, too, are old and frail.
