It is a little ostrich like to suggest the NHS can be maintained in the form we have all known and loved (at the same sort of price) with the changes in population age, the improved treatments and the current sense of entitlement every patient seems to have.

Maybe it is time for an enhanced two tier system rather like education where the rich pay for their own and thus subsidise the poor.

Unfortunately (like education) this will not mean the two systems will be equally good otherwise the rich would not bother to choose to pay for the "club class" version.

Let's face it I am not suggesting anything new. BUPA members have been jumping the queue to see surgeons as long as I can remember (I had my tonsils out in 1962 as a BUPA funded private patient) just extend the same sort of nod and a wink subsidy to other fields of the NHS.
