"And what exactly was the pledge the Lib Dems gave to students before the last election ?" David, if the LibDems had not agreed to drop some of their manifesto pledges to form a coalition government with the Conservatives, then the country would have had a highly unstable government at a time when the one thing that was needed was a clear policy to move forward out of the economic wasteland that resulted from the global economic downturn and the disastrous policies of Gordon Bean. Whatever you think of Nick Clegg and his followers, they did the statesmanlike thing that was the best option for the country after the electorate had created a hung parliament, and they should be given credit for doing so. They were not the only ones to give up manifesto commitments in the coalition agreement - among other necessary compromises the Conservatives abandoned their pledges to reform the rates of death duties. |
