I think it's true that the raising of fees for students didn't decrease public expenditure, but rather increased it. The Government had to give the Student Loan Corporation more money to cover the fees. The theory is that eventually we get it back but it counts as current public expenditure. Meanwhile the very mean decision to switch pension increases from RPI to CPI has been compensated by the student fee increases boosting CPI by 0.2% to 0.3% this year and for the next two years. You couldn't make it up. |
