Not sure it is being "above the law" but more the belief that normal rules and operation of the law are simply irrelevant or inapplicable to such persons given their position, the "MP expenses scandal" mess showing how far the rot in mindset exists i.e push the rules to the limit and see if you can get away with it. On the basis the political classes are not wholly "stupid" as shown by their education and what they have achieved in getting to be elected as MP, the lesson for me is the foolish mindset that does not recognise admitting errors or faults at the outset should be the norm but instead compounds the initial deceit and so makes matters worse. As commented earlier, Huhne's change of plea only occurred after he had been unable to stop his son's texts being admitted as evidence. One strongly suspects if he been able to do this the trial would have proceeded with him still claiming his innocence. |
