Yes, obviously I was overlooking such east-of-London economic centres as Birmingham, Bristol, the Thames Valley, Oxford, Southampton, Bournemouth, Reading - oh hang on, they're all west of London and you're proposing moving the country's main airport *on which major industries in those areas depend* to the other side of the most congested area of the country.  Sure you've thought this through in terms other than the gibbering superficiality of Boris's desire to impose his masculinity on the world?

Centre of gravity of the country's economic activity is west of London, and arguing black is white won't change that.  We live in a market economy dominated by private interests who have invested capital based on the current infrastructural layout of the country and who will oppose the erosion of that capital by massive state intervention that threatens their interests.  This, I note, is the exact reversal of how the two main parties are historically portrayed and makes me wonder, not for the first time, at what point the Conservatives and Labour swapped clothes.

...pointlessly 50 miles longer than they have to.  Are you sure that's the best use for 50 miles of extremely expensive railway hacked through the Home Counties?  Surely it would be substantially cheaper to improve the pathetic rail access to Heathrow first, since the airport's in the right place, already exists and the lack of adequate rail connections is due to crap planning rather than anything else?  No other country would tolerate their main airport being on the end of a single metro line and a privately owned branch which isn't even integrated into the host city's fare structure let alone the wider rail network.
