It isn't as if your restaurant ever gets to compete. It is summarily closed down because its license to operate is withdrawn. BI can only happen if it becomes London's hub and if the London TMA (the airspace over London) is reconfigured. As I understand it, the three-dimensional chess of air traffic control over London just gets too difficult if you have six busy airports (Luton, Stansted, City, LBI, Gatwick and also Heathrow), in addition to Southend and the RAF bases, in a very tight corner of the southeast. (see http://www.nats.co.uk/nsf/TMAPopup.htm ) If LHR were to remain open (assuming there was no air traffic control issue) there would be no business case for LBI. So the government would have to compel its closure. So it isn't an issue of competition. |
