Tim, absolutely right. It was admitted after R3 was ruled out that the DoT had simply not bothered to worry about how the huge icnrease in passengers would get to and from the airport. It was clear that air quality would never meet European standards. The initial modelling apparently was so bad in terms of noise and pollution that BAA had to make up new planes and engines (none of which have any indication of being built) in order to try and meet the limits. The DoT has for a long time been completely overrun by the BAA/ BA airport lobby, and its great that a govnt has finally had the courage to stand up to them. Lets not forget, as wee see the R3 monster again starting to rear its head, that the idea that air traffic will double over the next 40 years is based on a single forecast done in 2006. Before the credit crunch and the ongoing recession, and it assumed oil at $70 (vs currently over $100 even in a global slowdown) and ignored factors such as the ongoing large icnreases in air passenger tax. |
