I popped along to the GLA Environment Committee a couple of months ago to a session they had on Heathrow air quality and air pollution. Levels have been poor and pretty static for a decade and patience was wearing thin. BAA argue that it isn't the planes themselves so much as the road traffic - but much of the traffic is caused by people using the airport. Mike Tuffrey argued that the solution was in BAA's hands : You own the land. You could put a barrier up and refuse to allow private cars onto the site. Wouldn't that solve the problem ? BAA were quiet - very quiet - and said the C'tee should wait for it to issue its Surface Access Strategy - due soon. |
