"westerly landing approaches are going to conflict with 09R/L approaches into Heathrow (he says, drawing lines on a map)." I think you mean easterly approaches - during westerly winds! Yes, the approach paths would cross in the Twyford/Reading area. They could have the paths parallel and then get the Northolt planes to turn left a bit over Slough to line up with the runway. Not ideal, though. Incidentally, I don't agree with Brendan's view that 5500 ft is "fine for shorthaul". It's even shorter than at Belfast City, which Ryanair abandoned because they could only serve UK destinations and with reduced payloads owing to the short runway. Anyway, Northolt is a rotten location from a noise and pollution point of view. The area is heavily built up with housing, just like Heathrow. Frankly, Stansted would be better, and indeed was the preferred location for the first new runway in the south-east in the 2003 plan, originally due to be opened about now. |
