Tim, the only reason that Dubai is a hub is because it serves the airlines that are based there or there affiliated airlines or airlines that are going there or in that direction. The UK based airlines would mostly use other routes and require a UK based hub to wrangle their masses onto flights to other destination. I doubt that any other hub could absorb the the increased traffic if Virgin, BA and all the smaller or budget airlines moved away. As for the hub transfer system, it is almost never a benefit to the passengers to have any kind of stopover and usually is cheaper than direct routes. London to Cape Town is cheaper if you use an airline that has to take you via Europe or Asia. A perfect example of the airlines squeezing passengers and ignoring the environmental implications of short-haul flights. |
