I think the air traffic paths mean that BI and LHR are exclusive; that weaving traffic into four London airports is too complex (Amsterdam and Brussels are also unhappy about BI because its siting would interfere with some of their approach paths.) As to the 'peace and quiet' argument, yes it's important, but the closeness of LHR is at once a nuisance and part of what makes Chiswick so attractive; that you can be at LHR in 15 mins, in contrast to the 1 hour it takes to LGW and the 2 hours it would take to get to BI. Final point: it's hard to discern the logic of HS2 with the interchange in Acton for LHR, if LHR will cease to exist in 15 years time. |
