I agree with Luke that it is becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish between the three main parties, with cross-dressing now the norm - Cameron an 'heir to Blair' and Clegg increasingly a Cameron look-alike moving the Lib Dems closer to New LibCon model (and parties shaped by their leaders and specialist - now mainly PR/advertising specialists - not members). Many of the reasons for this are underlying social and economic change so that have broken down traditional divisions. But I find it depressing that all parties seem to be modelling themselves on the same focus groups and not having the boldness to lead by taking a distinctive stance. This means the main challenges to the consensus come from special interest groups, like that on the environment. This diversity will be reflected in Parliament only if there is a move to proportional representation - but that in itself is difficult and could end up with something worse than we have now. |
