This is probably the perfect place to ask why going federal is so inconceivable for Britain (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, poss. London because it has totally different economic and administrative needs to the rest of the country) We've already got 3 regional parliaments, except for England and London who do not have their own, something I think is really unfair. Parliament would finally have unquestionable national authority because it would rule on pan national issues only.

It would also deal with the British/English problem. Given that everyone but the English have a democratic body looking after their own needs but control Parliament, I think that the they are simultaneously disenfranchised and far too powerful. A British government needs to be separate from the administration of England. Only then will this country have a chance to unite wholeheartedly as Britain - as opposed to England plus attachments and occupied territory/s.

By the way the reason that no one here is getting the Britishness drive Brown is so keen on, is that they're English and to them the words are synonymous. Brown is a Scot and to him Britishness is a separate, additional identity layer to which anyone, island born or immigrated can aspire. So long as the political/parliamentary distinction is not made though, the biggest part of the country will never follow him on that particular journey.
