I agree with you Alastair. I was brought up a Tory, but switched to Labour when I was about 20 because, in our unequal class ridden society they were on the side of the less privileged. I assessed that the better off had plenty and that social cohesion was more important even to better off people like me than whether I drove a BMW rather than a Vauxhall.
I still believe this, and have generally voted Labour, and will most likely continue to do so, because Labour is still a bit more on the side of those on ordinary and low incomes.
However since New Labour the differences have become exceedingly small, and I'd much prefer a wider selection of policies which might eventually emerge under a fairer voting system.
As for Fraser's PPB on behalf of UKIP, what claptrap!
On most of the key issues of UK electoral politics we are miles away from any EU consensus (EG Iraq war, tax policy, criminal justice policy, energy policy, healthcare provision, welfare payments, privatisation of utilities, acceptability of foreign takeovers, role of trade unions etc etc etc) You could argue we're much closer to being the 51st state.
