I see no problem with a federal form of government - provided it is done systematically on a completely new constitutional basis. The problem at present is that there is a cobbled-together, evolving set of changes that don't work well together. Since Margaret Thacher began to significantly reduce the status and powers of local government, UK government has become ever more centralised - at the same time as various forms of devolved powers have been introduced, creating many anomalies. This is reflected in the muddled way different forms of voting system operate in different elections. By the way Anneberth: how do you know who is English on the forum, and who is not? And don't many Scots, Welsh and (Northern) Irish also see themselves as their own 'nationality' before being British? |
