The 2/3 party system is not working. All three main parties are grasping for the centre ground because that is the only way they have any chance of gaining power. This means that radical, progressive ideas have little or no chance of becoming adopted by any party and thereby becoming national policy. Instead we have what I think of as the Daily Mailisation of politics, a sort of conservative (small c) current that under the present system has little chance of being changed. This is one of the main reasons voter turn-out is so low. There's no point In voting because your vote DOESN'T COUNT. All the main parties are really aiming their campaigns at a few floating voters in marginal constituencies. The rest of us can go hang. I can think of only one way of countering this and that is by introducing some form of proportional representation. I know this scares people, but there are some systems of P.R. that minimise the risks. I think the Single Transferable Vote (STV) is one such system. If this were introduced into the UK, every single person's vote would affect the final outcome and so the widespread political apathy we see today could become a thing of the past. For me this can't happen soon enough, but I'm not holding my breath. |
