All ready for a long boring comment?
It is not the "policies" of the parties which give them success it is how good they are at running the country when in power.
Lloyd George wrecked the liberals. Then the fiasco of joining the gold standard cost the conservatives dear.
Later Anthony Eden's suez disaster. Then the mess the labour party got into with the Unions.
Thatchers bad error with the "poll" tax (still needs reforming by the way and the only party with a practical policy is Liberal Democrat to introduce income tax for it)
The bad error later of following the ERM cost the Conservatives their majority for years.
Now Labour are messing everything up. Oh and Blair's madness in going into Iraq.
So, in my view it is sensible administration, running the country well is what counts and I just hope the Conservatives do better next time!
