| This would have been a good idea but, as I said earlier, it is pointless coming up with wheezes for what do do about the bridge when this has already been decided some time ago. You can take issue with the requirements of listing status but all the agencies involved seem to have accepted quite early on that the bridge would be restored. This has meant that it is really a heritage project rather than a transport project and much of the massive cost is not related to strengthening the bridge but a like for like replacement of each part of the structure with materials that are difficult to replicate and have to be sourced from specialists. The amount of money that needs to be spent to keep the bridge open to all users is relatively small but it looks like the statutory imperative to maintain a heritage asset is more powerful than that to ensure that the bridge can be crossed. |
