| It isn't negative to point out the reality of what is needed for a tunnel. I didn't say it wasn't possible, just it will need an approach road of length several hundred metres to get vehicles from the surface to below the river bed and there will need to be an open trench at the tunnel portal. How else do vehicles get from the surface to below the river? Are you thinking of some sort of vehicle lift? On google maps you can look at the road infrastructure associated with Blackwall tunnel, Silvertown tunnel and many others to see how they are built. I've just checked again on google maps and I really can't see an empty stretch of land between King St and the A4 which is 50m-100m in length and ~8m wide (assuming a 2 lane tunnel) Are you thinking of having the tunnel portal in Homefield Rec? If not, where, exactly? As I've already mentioned, they could put the tunnel approach lanes in the A4, so 2 lanes for the tunnel and 2 lanes for all other traffic going to and from central London. On the S side of the bridge, perhaps St Paul's school could be persuaded to give up their sports fields. Unless you have other suggestions? "I would like to see some real tunnelling engineers look at the problem" You don't seem to have figured out that the challenge here isn't the tunnel... it is getting vehicles down to the tunnel, the space required for this and how it connects to the rest of the road network. |
