Once again would have to agree with Michael here. Even if there weren't massive engineering challenges for a tunnel (which would probably be more expensive than the current bill for refurbishment) it would be an unattractive option for pedestrians and cyclists.
While it is fun to play SimCity with regard to the bridge in reality what can be done is limited by some hard facts. Unless it is on the point of falling down and presents a very real risk to people on it and under it - it can't be demolished as it is a listed structure. Funding might now be in place to alleviate that risk - we will find out next month.
There seem to be an increasing number of people suggesting that the first phase of restoration will involve dismantling and work taking place at another location. This would be a clever move from Hammersmith & Fulham. As well as allowing the work to be done more cheaply and quickly, it could also help ensure that the second tranche of funding was forthcoming as it would be needed to fully reassemble the bridge. |
