Using the Terrorism Act to criminalise protest is the first step on the road to authoritarianism. It's depressing to see Starmer copying Trump. Palestine Action promotes civil disobedience and takes direct action against companies and institutions which it believes are being used by Israel to violently enforce apartheid, occupation, colonisation and genocide in Gaza or the West Bank. So far as I am aware, it does not use violence or threats of violence to further its campaign. To define it as "terrorist" because some members have allegedly caused criminal damage to property is a gross abuse of anti-terror legislation. The law is quite capable of dealing with such criminal damage, without resort to bringing it within the scope of terrorist legislation. It's chilling that, after the proscription of Palestine Action, even the expression of support for it may be considered an offence. What about free speech in this country? |
