| Robot Rachel has been reprogrammed on her recent trip to China. The people who really want this are the groups who own Heathrow, nearly all overseas investment funds including from China and Qatar. The idea that this will boost economic activity beyond the airport is whitewash, a lot of the increased passenger numbers will be in transit and won’t set foot outside the airport. The transport infrastructure serving Heathrow is already creaking, particularly the Piccadilly line. Given there’s going to be substantial increases in population numbers in West London over the next decade where will the extra capacity come from to make that line useable for commuters into central London. The new trains won’t make much difference in the long term. Of course the real elephant in the room is the environment. There’s a 60mph speed limit already in place in the M4 adjacent to the airport, for ‘air quality’. Having a lot more hers blowing out emissions won’t improve that, despite claims about electric planes and sustainable fuel (which isn’t really that green anyway). And that before you consider the carbon footprint of actually building the runway. It’s madness. We are constantly hectored that time is running out to cut global emissions, yet this entirely contradicts that. Mind you, the Maldives and Seychelles will be down there with Atlantis by 2040, so there won’t be any flights to there! |
