To be English is to be an amalgam of wave upon wave of immigrants. Of course for most of history those immigrants were white skinned and more often than not called invaders but they are still immigrants. The only problem with immigration over the last 20-30 years has been the lack of control over numbers. I do not care what colour of skin an immigrant has, what religion (or lack of religion) they have but the one undeniable fact is that the only reason the UK population is rising is due to immigration and that more recent immigrants tend to have more kids than us "native" English. The increase in population is putting services under strain but more importantly it allows business to rely on a constant stream of young cheap labour rather than investing in improving their processes. Against that immigration has massively expanded our "native" English society. Even with something as simple as food, immigrants have brought new dishes, new flavours, new foods into our restaurants and over time into our home. By way of example a month back I had a very enjoyable meal at a relatively new Somali restaurant on Acton High Street. I had no idea what to expect but it was good enough to want to go back |
