| In his retirement message, published in THE LAMP School magazine of 1959..Mr Alan Cooke recalls the outbreak of WW2... "" From those times the memory images flit before the mind in rapid succession, beginning with the assembly of the whole School on the playground on 3rd September 1939,and the march down Sutton Court Road on the first stage of the evacuation to Amersham and High Wycombe."" ""Within a few weeks a home portion of the School was established in Isleworth. In 1942 both portions returned to Burlington Lane. Bombs were dropped on the School field and, in 1944 two major incidents occurred within a period of 36 hours....we were away at harvest camp at the time....and the School hall was destroyed."" (There is a photo somewhere in cyberspace!) ""General School Certificate Examinations were held in the shelters in the field"" ( near Boys Sports Field..near Jock Ironside's Metal workshop) ""Mr Curran,first Head master of the School retired at the end of 1944. (Mr Alan Cooke then took over...the first V2 rocket landed round the corner in Staveley Road nine months later) "The war came to an end in May 1945. The School's 21st Birthday Celebrations were held in October 1946. The unvieling of the War Memorial took place on 23rd May 1948. The New School Hall was ready for use in September 1953 (JL remembers that occasion). SEMPER SURSUM!! |
