| I attended the Chiswick County School for Girls, as it was called then, from 1939 to 1943. The school was evacuated to Amersham, Bucks, at the beginning of the war and we went to Amersham Grammar School. Amersham Grammar pupils attended in the mornings, and we went in the afternoons. Our mornings were spent in an old Scout Hut in the woods doing "Prep", there was no heat at all and it was freezing. I can't remember exactly when we came back to Chiswick, but we did have air raid shelters on the boys playing fields where we spent many hours. Some of the teachers that I recall are, Miss Baxter, the Headmistress, Miss Vine, Miss Joseph, Miss Eldridge, Miss Bush, Miss Seaton the Art Mistress who occasionally would be driven to school in a pony and trap. As I recall the Art classroom was brand new with lots of windows. In another letter written by J. Lawes he remembers the Masters that he had when he went to the boys school, among them he mentions H. Jones, and that was my cousin who taught languages and sadly has passed away. He attended the school as a boy and then later as a teacher I remember that the school was divided into four houses, Fauconberg (blue), Devonshire (red), Thackeray (yellow) Hogarth (green). Also at the end of every term we would congregate in the Hall and among the songs we would sing was "Forty Years On". |
