"'The idea of business being massively pro R3 is just bullshit, may oppose it.'" Hmm, apart from BAA and BA, which are fairly large businesses in their own right, aren't the CBI in favour? [checks] "A third runway, built and operated within the strict environmental limits set by government, will ensure that Heathrow is able to provide the quality services that business and other travellers need." Via http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7615936.stm which also mentions the British Chamber of Commerce, Severn Trent Water and a load of others. Then there's the Institute of Directors, who have already come out today and said it must go ahead: http://press.iod.com/2010/03/26/heathrow-expansion-must-go-ahead-says-iod/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=heathrow-expansion-must-go-ahead-says-io “Of course it’s essential that noise and air quality targets are met. But those who raise objections to further development need to recognise that there’s no realistic or cost-effective alternative to expansion. To provide for the needs of the economy over the next 20 to 30 years we must have a third runway.” So given that at least three leading business lobby groups seem to be solidly pro-runway, I'm inclined to the opinion that a fair chunk of British business wants the blasted thing and you're kidding yourself if you don't realise that's what you're up against. |
