Bonkers is a bit strong — as I said earlier it would be challenging but it certainly isn't impossible (according to someone who lives locally who has worked on similar projects). It probably already has been ruled out because Sainsbury's would be making a big deal about it if they were going to do it. It is more likely it was concerns for privacy of their residents and reduced security within the development that put paid to the idea. The arguments in favour are clear — Chiswick Park station is cut off from the town centre and very few people think of it a central Chiswick destination even though it is closer to the main drag than Gunnersbury or Turnham Green. Easier access would boost its popularity significantly. There is space for a gentle ramp into the tunnel with lifts at the station end which could be designed in a way to make at least one platform fully accessible. It is likely that this was considered because Sainsbury's are proposing a car free development for which they won't be delivering a single pedestrian or public transport gain but, like additional pedestrian entry points, there doesn't seem to have been a viable solution. |
