| If we really want to stop this dreadful trade and the people-smuggling gangs, we need to provide an alternative safe route. A fleet of buses sent over to Calais would stop it immediately, together with timely assessment of asylum seekers, either on French soil or when they arrive here. No more stacking them in hotels to make it look like a huge problem when it isn’t, or allowing them to be exploited by ‘informal’ employment. The sooner they can officially start to contribute to our country the better, as have thousands of immigrants before them. |
