With respect, Ed, a cafe nor a restaurant are community spaces. They are, however, commercial spaces in need of revenue to survive under the best of circumstances. We once had several language tutors who used our space. One in particular simply came and went as she wished without any transaction from her nor her student. I mentioned this to her and she got irritated saying "this is a community space" which I found odd given the lease we hold with a private landlord (among other things). I also cited several examples of real community spaces including, as you did, a library. After that, if one sets foot in a cafe or restaurant it is necessary to partake of what's on offer if you expect to sit down. If you disagree, simply direct folks to your offices in Acton where they should feel welcome to waltz in and have a seat at any old desk whenever they wish. |
