"You have been sold a pup. Time to recognise that fact and apologise to the rest of us." Councillor Sam commenting today on my post from about a month ago. The point I made, that Councillor Sam now demands satisfaction for, is this: "I still find it a bit odd that positive changes intended to improve health, air quality and reduce congestion can be so polarising. Many cyclists own cars (87% of them in 2015, including myself) and the average cyclist earns more than average, so you'd have thought they would fit more naturally into a Tory coalition - rather than be demonised by it (at least locally)." If Councillor Sam is so incensed by the notion that a local resident should advocate making progress in reducing congestion and improving air quality, then he's really not going to like this: "We will fund thousands of zero-emission buses and give our towns and cities cycle lanes worthy of Holland. This will improve the air we breathe and increase both mental and physical health, as well as reduce emissions." And if he hasn't slammed his laptop shut in disgust already....try this: "We will build first hundreds, then thousands, of miles of segregated cycle lane and create more low-traffic neighbourhoods to stop rat-running and allow people to walk and cycle. We will expand school streets, which have caused dramatic falls in traffic and pollution around schools. I'm quoting from The Ten Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution published by his own Tory government at the end of last year. https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/936567/10_POINT_PLAN_BOOKLET.pdf I'm not going to ask Sam to apologise to me (or Boris!) because that would be a childish, point scoring exercise :-) |
