I'm not one for over-regulation by the government, but having watched as all the major banks close their branches in rural market towns leaving them bank-free, I wonder if there is a case for requiring the banks to consult and put forward valid alternatives for customers before they are allowed to close any more branches - and perhaps requiring them to at least look at the idea of retaining one branch in each town with the facility to process monies for their competitors ? While some banking facilities are provided by the Post Office, not all are, and besides that can lead to large queues at POs where they are doing the banks' job for them. |
