I started cycling again during lockdown 1 and these road changes enable me to take my 7 year old from CHR to school every day on a bike. We tend to stick to the pavements until we hit Wellesley Road which is closed to through traffic so pretty quiet. Then a bit more pavement until we get to the bit of CS9 that's been built. Kew Bridge has v. wide pavements and most parents use these to cross the river. At all times I'm considerate and give pedestrians priority - and I'm teaching my son to do the same. When I'm on my own, I tend to go on the roads as it is easier and quicker. The decision to switch between roads, pavements and cycle lanes is about safety - or at least confidence for a new cyclist. I know car drivers don't want a wobbly 7-year old on the road when they're trying to get to work - because they've hooted and told me to get off the road! I know some pedestrians don't want children on bikes on the pavements - because they've told me so too :-) However, the vast majority of people I see in Chiswick on my school drop offs are polite, smiley and understand I'm trying to keep my son out of people's way while keeping him safe. |
