Hi Ken. I beg to differ, I cycle Fauconberg Road to Staveley Road most days. Yes there are less cars (as much to do with offices being shut as anything else) but given 75% of cycle fatalities happen at or near a junction; adding a barrier junction to Staveley Road makes the road statistically more lethal. What I find more dangerous about the execution of this barrier though is a cyclist has to cross the oncoming lane of Park Road to approach the barrier in both directions, which is largely a blind corner. The gap between the plastic barrier and the pavement is actually very narrow too. To negotiate this safely a cyclist has to slow almost to a stop, which is where I feel accidents are more likely than if it was still a straight piece of road, or if priority was given to cyclists on Staveley over vehicles approaching Staveley from Park Road. I have shared my views with photos to Mark Frost etc. a few weeks ago. No response yet and no changes to the barrier. My other grievance is before this second lockdown, there were more cars queuing north on Sutton Court Road and most mornings the traffic line came back beyond the junction with Fauconberg Road. Southbound is free moving and the cars travelling at 20+mph. I think this makes exiting Fauconberg Road to cross Sutton Court Road to enter Staveley Road more dangerous than it was before. |
