I cycled that same route back to Chiswick and saw with my own eyes... The buses on Hammersmith Road were gridlocked in the traffic because the bus lane has been removed to provide a temporary cycle lane. A quarter of the road space at Hammersmith roundabout has been removed to provide a temporary cycle lane (which you need a deathwish to use - crossing three lanes of vehicle traffic to both enter and again to exit it). Chiswick High Road has extensive traffic measures with the bus lane removed and side street access restricted. The total gridlock today has everything to do with these local traffic measures as well as the accident that caused the closure of Shepherds Bush Road. Given how recently a single burst water main caused gridlock in Chiswick, I find these measures very concerning for the future of Chiswick. They have caused such a poor experience, hostility and resentment. There needs to be consultation and engagement to get residents and businesses on board. |
