"Therefore revoking Article 50 would take us away from this cliff edge and provide space for some clear debate and thinking to take place. Some sort of National Assembly could then be established to work out how we might exit the E.U. in a constructive and beneficial way and this could then be presented to the British people." That won't be possible. The European Court of Justice has ruled that the UK can revoke Article 50 but it needs to be done in good faith and be "unequivocal and unconditional". So if the UK position is, "Hold on a bit lads, we will revoke Article 50 until we figure out what the hell we are doing, then invoke it again when we get our act together", the EU wouldn't be obliged to accept the revocation. |
