Exactly. This shouldn’t be hard to understand. If a democratic decision is reversed by means that are a) peaceful b) legal c) democratic Then by definition the “will of the people” hasn’t been “thwarted” “overturned” “cancelled” or any other such emotive nonsense, it just means that people have changed their minds. The Lib Dem’s are simply positioning themselves as an unequivocally Remain party, as they are perfectly entitled to. The idea that The One True Vote cannot be questioned & must be treated as holy writ, containing a mandate with no expiry date is democratically illiterate. A referendum is either irreversible or democratic, it cannot be both. In the unlikely event of the Lib Dem’s forming a majority government they can safely say that there is a mandate to revoke A50, I can’t see it happening, but I’d be pleasantly surprised were I to be proved wrong. |
