Reducing rates, rent etc may do a little in the short term but a complete rethink is needed as what can be done with non viable units on high streets. Local authorities can help by granting change of use, planning consent etc to encourage conversion to residential. Other issues would need to be overcome such as affordability for end users. This is where the Government need to step in with grants to encourage the right sort of units are built i.e. not luxury apartments but homes that ease the housing crisis, council homes, first homes, studios etc. Hopefully a free market would do the job but if not Landlords would have to be compelled to act. Thinking needs to change. |
