Richard, neither I nor others who post on here ignore the failings of teh EU. It is yourself who is blinkered and dogmatic and cannot see the positives. THe UK had the best of both worlds, access to a market of half a billion wealthy consumers and major industries, without being in the euro. THe euro is flawed but the eurzone is recovering. WE have covered this before, Spain had a long history of chronic un- and underemployment, had a massive credit boom and a big bust. It is now recoverign strongly. Even France is seeing signs of life, but the main constraint there is a very rigid and regulaed economy that does not create jobs, not the fault of the euro. Italy and Greece are major issues, the latter ultimately a small country (whcih doesnt alter the pain people there feel) and its not clear how both these countries move forward. However, that situation does not change whether the UK is in or out of the EU. THe eurozone outgrew the UK and will probably continue over the next 2-3 years at least. It would be wonderful if you could move beyond the straw man arguments and blinkered rhetoric. THe EU has many faults, but it is not responsible for all the problems of EUrope far from it. In terms of the single market benefits, cars are actually a major single market success story. Yes there has been some offshoring, a factor of globaisation the world over, just look at the US. But car output in Q1 reached a 17 yer high, with nearly a third of the output exported to the EU and the average parts content imported from EUrope around 40% in every car produced. THe last 18 motnhs the main driver of export growth has been to.... Europe, offsetting the slowdown in CHina and India. GOsh... Regadrding the THatcherite reforms, some were needed, but there was rarely a clear and coherent economic policy and 3 million unemloyed plus the decimation of large swathes of British manufacturing was a pretty high price to pay. Large parts of the country have never recovered... now the right wing TOries would like to finish the job... |
