"Well, since joining GDP per capita has increased by around 30% for the UK, France and Germany by 20% and Italy by 10%. So in the early 1970s the UK was the sick man of Europe, with major economics problems and living standards well below those of the main European economies. THat is no longer the case. SO memebership of the EU has been rather good for the UK.." You are making the assumption that the improvements in the UK's economy were largely due to EU membership, and thereby ignoring the impact of the economic reforms brought in by the Conservative government in the 1980s. As the Greeks will tell you, being in the EU is not necessarily a boon for the economy. Likewise the unemployed young people in Spain, and indeed a significant number of the people of France. |
