from the ever incisive @davidallengreen What would a UK government do if it decided to self-sabotage a successful Brexit? And how would that differ from current UK policy? Such a government would waste time by, say, having a needless general election at a critical time in the two year process. Such a government would give no indication that it had a grasp of the relevant issues and process, and every indication that it did not. Such a government would rule out viable options such as single market and customs union membership and ECJ jurisdiction. Such a government would fail to keep all the home nations on board against an EU somehow keeping the EU27 united. Such a government would stoke up unrealistic media and public expectations of Brexit. In fact, a UK government intending to self-sabotage a successful Brexit would, well, be little different from the one with have now. The key word being "successful" of course. I normally firmly favour "cock-up" over "conspiracy" but the above is depressingly plausible. |
