Davis provides a great examples of the trend in populist politics. People just 'know' what is right or true and no amount of actual facts and reasoned arguments will change that. Any single example of piece of hearsay is extrapolated across the whole range with no logical basis. Whethers its voting for Brexit, supporting grammar schools, or voting Trump (who is proposing the biggest tax cut for the super rich in the US ever seen), people 'know' they are right. Debate is pointless. Its a sad state of affairs. It is certainly true that all teh research has suggested that the impact on low end wages for mass immigration has actually been minimal. It is also likely that any small uptick from restricting immigration (IF that actually happens) would be offset from the negative impact on the overall economy. There is the broader problem that the UK is a low wage, low productivity economy. Many of these jobs simply would not exist if the UK economy was more productive ... WIth the unemployment rate at close to a 30 year low yet wage growth is slowing... suggests the problem is not supply of labour... |
